If you are experiencing a medical emergency, stop reading and contact your local emergency services immediately. Do not delay seeking urgent care because of something you have read here.
Metabolic Myths publishes general educational information about metabolic health. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment by a qualified clinician.
What this site is
We examine claims about insulin resistance, blood sugar, GLP-1 medications and metabolic syndrome, and we describe what the published research supports. The purpose is to help you understand the evidence well enough to have a better conversation with the people actually responsible for your care.
What this site is not
Reading this site does not create a clinician-patient relationship. Nothing here is tailored to you. We do not know your medical history, your current medications, your test results, your family history, or anything else that determines what is appropriate for you specifically.
General evidence describes what tends to happen across a population. It does not tell you what will happen to you. Two people with the same lab value can require entirely different management, and that judgement requires a clinician who knows your case.
Medication
Do not start, stop, change the dose of, or alter the timing of any prescribed medication on the basis of something you read here. Talk to the clinician who prescribed it.
This applies with particular force to medications for diabetes and to GLP-1 receptor agonists, where dose changes and interactions carry real risk. It applies equally to blood pressure medication, lipid-lowering therapy, and anything else affecting metabolic control.
Diet, fasting and exercise
Substantial changes to what or when you eat, and substantial changes in physical activity, can affect blood glucose, blood pressure and medication requirements. If you are pregnant, managing a diagnosed condition, taking medication that lowers blood glucose, or have a history of disordered eating, discuss changes with a clinician before making them.
Currency of information
Medical evidence changes. A page here reflects our reading of the research at the time it was written or last revised, and it may not reflect the most recent findings or current clinical guidance. Where a page has been revised, the revision date is shown.
External links and advertising
We link to external sources, including journals and health organisations, so that you can check our work. We do not control that content and are not responsible for it.
This site carries advertising, including programmatic advertising and direct sponsorship. Advertisements are not endorsements. The presence of an advertisement for a product, service, clinic or medication does not mean we recommend it, and advertisers have no influence over our editorial conclusions.
Your responsibility
Decisions about your health are yours to make with your clinician. By using this site you accept that you do so on that basis, and that reliance on any information here is at your own discretion.
